The Baseline with Ricky Volante of the Historical Basketball Leage

The Baseline NBA Podcast continues its journey into all things basketball this week with a very special edition episode. Our Facetime with The Baseline episodes always features guests from the industry that are doing something of note in the basketball space. This week is no different as we sit down with Ricky Volante, CEO of the Historical Basketball League.

With the controversy surrounding James Wiseman and the Memphis Tigers basketball program, college players are a great disadvantage when it comes to their earning potential and ability to capitalize on their likeness. The Historical Basketball League will give future players like Wiseman a choice to grow financially and still gain an education.

Mr. Volante explains why the league was formed, how the league is challenging the NCAA and plans for sustainability. He also discusses the importance of investors and board members like David West and Soledad O’Brien and so much more as the league looks to launch in 2021.
Notes from the HBL website include:
The First College Basketball League To Enable Athletes To Directly Benefit From Their Talent, Marketability, and Hard Work By Offering An Education and Compensation.

College basketball players are the heart of the college game and deserve a fair share of the revenues they generate. Before the HBL, they were excluded from those financial benefits while everyone around them received significant compensation.

The HBL aims to change the landscape of collegiate athletics by disrupting the amateurism model and offering a legitimately superior alternative. We aim to improve the economic outlook of our athletes, the majority of whom will likely be minorities and/or come from a low socioeconomic background.
Over 50% of college basketball players in the Power 5 Conferences come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The HBL enables athletes to directly benefit from their talent and efforts and create greater economic and academic opportunities for the players and their families.
