With the upcoming sequel to ‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy’ comes the much anticipated ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’. In the original sleeper hit, the lead character ‘Ron Burgundy’ is an oblivious, chauvinistic, egotistical, anchorman for a television newsstation in San Diego.
What most people don’t know is that the character ‘Ron Burgundy’ is loosely based on a real life Detroit newsman Mort Crim. Will Ferrell recently stated that he came up with the ‘Ron Burgundy’ character when he happened to watch a documentary about Jessica Savitch who was one of the first anchor women on television. In the documentary, Mort Crim recounted how he was a “real male chauvinist pig” to Ms. Savitch because she was a woman. In that conversation, what caught Will Ferrell’s ear was Mort Crim‘s perfect anchorman pitch and tone as he was interviewed. Apparently, he didn’t break his television persona and spoke as an ‘anchorman’ throughout the interview which made Will Ferrell think of the premise for ‘Anchorman’.
Interestingly enough, Mort Crim has been aware of this long lost parody since the first movie and seems to be genuinely flattered by it. Finding out that ‘Ron Burgundy’ is based off of real person seems to make the upcoming sequel even funnier to watch. Hopefully the newest installment of ‘Anchorman’ will make us all remember how funny the original one was and enjoy how far ‘Ron Burgundy’ has come. ‘Anchorman 2:The Legend Continues’ comes out on Wednesday, December 18th.
